Even though Southwest Industrial Gases handled extremely flammable material, it was not required to have fire sprinklers because its building existed before new fire codes took effect. 

 "Sprinkler systems can immediately cool cylinders, reducing the likelihood of additional cylinder releases, fire spread and off-site consequences," the board's safety bulletin said.

California adopts new code requiring all new one and two family dwellings and townhouses to be sprinklered begining  January 1, 2011. Kudos to California. Hopefully the rest of the states will make code changes that save lives. Read more

Read what John Otto has to say about mandated fire sprinkler laws. As a installer of fire sprinklers, I nor the company I work for, are interested in installing fire sprinklers in homes. The  profit margin is too small. The competition too great. The price of sprinklering homes is nominal. What I am for is the saving of lives not only of our loved ones, but firemen.
